Half Ket Half Amazing: social influence

Jak, k***a, żyć? (How to live?)

*Scroll down for the English version*

Czasy mamy, jakie mamy.

Ci ostatni zaczęli z nim przygodę w okresie swojego nastoletniego buntu i dał mi dokładnie to, czego wtedy potrzebowali. Rozumiał eksperymentowanie z innym brzmieniem i gatunkami.

How to live?

Times are tough. Financial, economic, and existential crises, increasingly rapid pace of life and pressure to consume more and more. For our parents this change is fundamental, qualitative, because they were introduced to the free market mechanisms only as adults and barely they learned it, the globalization, digitization of life and another revolution in manners and morals fell upon them. The generation born in the 80's, grew up in capitalism, to the sounds of the "university graduation guarantees finding a dream jobs and welfare" mantra. But this approach soon turned out to be far from the truth and their aspirations had to be revised. Watching the front rows falling, younger generation lost interest in marching in columns. Today parents are so busy trying to make ends meet, they don’t have time to spend it with their children, and to share at least a little bit of the values they were raised with themselves. They wring their hands, complain about the new, bad times, and somehow they forget that to some extent this is a result of their own laziness and ignorance. It is easy to throw the responsibility on schools and teachers, and more difficult to admit their own mistakes. It's no surprise that when the kids take a good look at their working like a horse, yet still frustrated, parents, all they want is to escape from such a reality. From the imposed patterns of behavior, corporate structure, fixed working hours and nutritional plan that begins with a ham sandwich in a greasy breakfast paper, and ends with a warmed up chop which father washes down with a canned beer. This drama seems to be even bigger than the one on TV which the whole family watches for the rest of the evening.

All they have to do is to choose a way to escape the average. One of them may be entering into some kind of organized structure - from a school study groups to political youth wing - in order to satisfy a need of affiliation and security. Why bother and search for the truth in the sea of information and opinions by yourself, if you can cling to someone stronger, who seems to possess the secret knowledge how to make the world a better place? One can also withdraw from the mainstream, stay away from the politics which he thinks he can’t influence anyway, and instead of all that, he can focus on himself - try self-fulfillment in accordance with the maxim "work to live, don’t live to work". A bit like the hipsters I wrote about at the beginning of the year. An alternative which combines dissatisfaction with the status quo and disbelief that it may change, is something that in Polish rap is known as a way of a "real street thug" (in colloquial speech: I don’t give a f***).

In Poland, the rap target begins with elementary school teenagers and ends with the people who grew up with that music, now in their thirties. The latest’s adventure with rap began during their teenage rebel and gave them exactly what they needed at that time. Rap itself evolved over the years - people who talked about their poverty and backyard vibe, gained a bunch of fans and started to make money on that. The income changed their position and naturally they began to rap about their new lives and new opportunities. A fan following the artist from the beginning was able to keep up with these changes. He understood the need of experimenting with other sounds and genres. Then at some point, the period of his teenage angst came to an end, he stood up from the bench and started to wonder whom would he report the theft of a bicycle, if there was no police? He began to understand how the system works. And had to decide whether he wanted to hear stories of his past idols about how much money they spend on class A drugs and class B women. On the other hand, we have today's teenagers, for whom such stories are incompatible with their desperate need for rebellion and a chronic lack of cash. All they can identify with is this rap about the street life, poverty, rejecting the system that imposes obligations and does not grant tangible benefits. Number one enemy (crucial to the rebellion) is the law enforcement, which stands in a way of individual’s absolute freedom.

Recently the number of rappers preaching the principles of the street life has increased significantly. The scale of their popularity leaves no doubt that the problem exists. You don’t have to be an expert on the subject to notice that their fame usually doesn’t come from their unique storytelling skills, use of clever metaphors, homonyms, multiple rhymes, hashtags and complex flow. It’s more about appeasing the young generation’s hunger for excitement. Because it doesn’t buy the traditional life plan, where after graduation one sets up home and works hard to provide for it. Intoxicated with colorful pictures from tabloids, with details of luxurious lives of celebrities, teens crave fireworks, they want exciting things to happen all the time. But they have no idea how to make their dreams of prosperity come true. They don’t want to wait. They believe they deserve everything. They cry for the moon and if they don’t get what they want, they get frustrated and finally start to hate everyone who had achieved something. They don’t even make the distinction between the people who have had an easy start through financial resources of their parents and those who actually owe their success to hard and systematic work. Lacking ideas for their own future, they focus on the present and on the physical stimuli. They experiment with stimulants which become their daily bread, calming their fear of what’s coming up next. They try to supplement natural endorphins with adrenaline - the hormone of fear, fight and flight. They don’t believe they can achieve anything at all, so simple ambitions, propagated in street rap music, are more convincing to them than unrealistic calls to conquer the world. Why live a dream with no guarantee of success, if you can just be a good fellow, respect other boys in the hood and solve all the problems by twisting somebody’s arm or rolling a blunt? Building a tough character? Great! But how about using it on the pursuit of happiness, not to chase black-hearted villains in the alleys?

Increase in social unrest among young people is visible wherever you go, but the problem is not presented in the media honestly. If you believed the broadcast, the riots in the suburbs of Paris, in the UK, or Greece are ALWAYS caused by organized criminal groups of young people, who fail to adapt to life in a society and on principle fight the system, they don’t understand. Of course, from time to time we hear that unemployment among young, also well educated, people in Europe reaches tens of percent. And that they feel betrayed by the system which excludes them from the labor market (i.e. failing to adjust educational offer to the needs of the rapidly changing market) and does not allow them to function normally. Unfortunately, there’s lack of coverage to raise this issue, because today media present breaking news about exchange of impertinence between parliamentarians, Smolensk-gate, attack of a lunatic in a country where anyone can buy a gun, earthquakes in regions with high seismic activity and a dog from Radom, which can make somersault in exchange for pork ears.

I wonder if at least the academia looks at these issues. For the purpose of term papers, or maybe even master thesis. On the other hand, we all know that most of the knowledge generated at the university never leaves its walls.

Coraz weselej i pogrzeb. Zabójczy marihunaen a śmiertelnie chora sfera publiczna [Deadly marijuana versus terminally ill public sphere]

*Scroll down for the English version*

a) TAK

b) NIE

Praktycznie codziennie.

Media bez chwili zastanowienia postanowiły zaserwować ten stek krwisty i w atmosferze grozy.

Szczerze, to jestem zniesmaczona poziomem wspomnianych wywiadów. Mam wystarczająco dużo własnych do ogarnięcia. A bez silnych, a nawet skrajnych emocji, byłoby zwyczajnie nudno.

Deadly marijuana versus terminally ill public sphere.

Before you start reading this column, take a short IQ test.

Recent research of the scientists from the National Institute of Health in Rome showed that one of the substances included in red wine - resveratrol - is capable of stopping mutation of a flu virus. Do you think that this statement is identical to: "Drinking two bottles of a poor quality red wine daily immortalizes":

a) YES

b) NO

If you answered “yes” to the above question, you probably already have consumed your daily dose of immortality and this quiz amused you. Go get some sleep before you attempt to read this again.

Recently, more and more frequently, different media storms break out. Regarding partnerships, planned changes in the beloved PKP (Polish National Railways), GMOs or the election of a black Pope. The citizens buffeted by the economic crisis are willing to participate in online discussions on topics that do not translate immediately into their material condition. Apparently it makes them feel that they are neither powerless nor inactive. Although imprisoned in the grip of the system, they may not want to throw off the yoke, but at least they fidget a little.

Some time ago, a number one topic was again the legalization of marijuana. All because of a suicide committed by writer Anna Fryczkowski’s son and the interviews she later gave for weeklies "Wprost" and "Newsweek".

To cut a long story short - on a Christmas Eve, just before dinner, a sixteen-year-old hanged himself in his room. Parents maintain that they always used to be close with their son, so few months earlier they easily noticed early signs of depression and a drop in his self-esteem. They took him to see a psychiatrist who prescribed him appropriate medication; they talked with him, supported him and at the same time they decided to give him a lot of freedom and refrained from interfering with his private sphere. Only after his tragic death and feverish review of his personal things and correspondence they discovered that he has been smoking weed for the last several months. Virtually every day.

Without a second thought, media decided to serve this steak rare and in the atmosphere of terror. I know mothers whom these interviews led to the border of hysteria. The level of the subsequent discussion in media was just a nail in the coffin. It turned out that marijuana is more dangerous than cancer.

First of all, it is hard to agree with the view that the sole cause of this boy’s suicide was smoking pot. As a rule, alcohol and drugs exacerbate, deepen culprit’s mental condition from before the consumption. While in the first case we can talk about (and not always) intensification of mood, reaction to drugs largely depends on a character. If someone has a tendency to melancholy, then even stoned does not rather turn into an incurable optimist.

Secondly, I personally am surprised that the mother decided to publicize this story and so exposed herself to the public attack. Not even because of the always active and willing to speak marijuana fans and legalization supporters, but also a number of anonymous Internet users who could indifferently accuse her of being a bad mother. To some this issue has a political dimension – this story was brought up by media shortly after Ruch Palikota (Polish liberal left-wing party) filed a petition to legalize marijuana. On the other hand, as a writer she obviously has a strong tendency to exhibitionism. I understand that she has suffered the most terrible consequences of a faith that the son's problems were nothing more than the hardships of puberty. And so her loss was not in vain, she wanted to call on other mothers to increase their vigilance. This attitude in general does not give rise to any concerns. However, the motif of random testing children for drugs is brought up a number of times in these interviews. They even mention an idea to set up a foundation that would encourage parents to run such tests... And there is not a single word about the most important thing - what to do once you learn your children or siblings use drugs?! The absence of an answer to this basic question only contributes to maintain the atmosphere of terror in this dramatic story, and certainly does not help parents to get out of the thicket of superstitions and phantasmagoria, which this subject is to some of them.

What is really poignant in this story is the reflection about what might be going on such a young person’s mind that he decides to take away his life before actually getting to know it. Whilst respecting the mother's pain, the reason why he reached for drugs could have been neither youth trend nor peer pressure. The increasing pace of life, pressure to success, and all of this during the global economic crisis we experience first-hand, cause stress many people can cope with differently than reaching for psychoactive substances. It is alarming that such frustrations occur among younger and younger people. Before our eyes and under the wings of busy parents a new generation is born – a generation of creatures so utterly self-centered that they do not give a fig about the outside world. Not only politics, school and their own parents. Even the future. Adults bought the story of the unlimited freedom of an individual and firmly believe that in the times of militant relativism their children will raise themselves alone on wise men and responsible citizens. Their interest in the fate of the offspring suddenly returns on the occasions like the above mentioned articles. And unfortunately the responses it causes range from a fit of hysterics to a long-term paranoia. Most of these mothers would have certainly answered YES to the question at the beginning of this column.

Alcohol Aficionados (AA) will argue that a glass of red wine a day improves blood flow, and supporters of legalizing marijuana, that it has some medicinal properties useful in treatment of glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and other diseases. But you don’t have to look far, since in both cases applies the universal truth that what harms the most is the lack of moderation. And this applies not only to stimulants, but also food, money, and even feelings.

This column is not intended to take a position in the debate about the legalization of marijuana and the scale of its harmfulness compared to alcohol. The very thought of taking part in such a debate is already tiresome. In fact, to me under this bubbling surface hides a lot more important problem.

Frankly, I am disgusted with the level of the aforementioned interviews. I do not like when someone is trying to convince me that it is better to feel and experience than to think. This kind of articles I expected after the tabloids such as "Fakt" or "Super Express" - their main goal is to stimulate emotions, not intellect. What do I care about other peoples’ emotions? I have enough of my own to deal with. Perhaps such a strategy of the weekly magazines stems from a fact that less and less people reach for the press. Faced with a barrage of information, instead of collecting them from various sources, people often look for them in one place where they are the most condensed, for example, tabloids or popular internet portals. Because it is so convenient to go briefly through large images with concise comment. Sometimes I get the impression that some people join the discussion only after reading the very headers of the articles... Besides, for as long as life does not make it necessary, one can participate in a society without constantly updating his knowledge and being aware of the changes taking place in the community. Hence, without strong or even extreme emotions, it would be simply boring.

Of course, the discussion which flared up after the publication of these articles was not substantive simply because the vast majority of people really do not know how to argue. Why even bother to present rational arguments, when it is easier to go berserk and throw mud at each other? However, in defense of the disputants I must admit that this time there was no substance that could be referred to. All they got was an emotional and verbal diarrhea, and they replied accordingly.

A history devoid of context (like the most recent statistics on deaths from using soft drugs, also compared to the deaths caused by alcohol, opinions of experts on the relationship between the use of this type of drugs and deterioration of mental health in a given age group, conclusions etc.) brings no real added value. This article does not provide knowledge about the problem; maybe in a few cases it will draw someone’s real and matter-of-fact attention. The very structure of this statement – creating a clear division between good and evil forces – makes reader focus exclusively on emotions. Instead of considering the rational level of the phenomenon, encouraged to empathy by a narrative style, reader empathizes on the role of described family members and so to a future discussion on drugs topic he would bring these emotions, not substantive arguments.

What we observe can be described as tabloid newspapers having an affair with magazines, which results in the beginning of ‘tablozines’. It is a pity that the Polish public sphere died during that delivery. So what's next? Should we legalize marijuana? Or impose a prohibition for the public good? Or why don’t we - for a change - talk about something that really matters?
