Panoszą się wszędzie z tymi swoimi zadartymi nosami, wytartymi rurkami i drogimi gadżetami. Won do fryzjera, a potem do pracy, nieroby! Je*ać hipsterów, prawda?! Wszyscy jesteśmy w tej kwestii zgodni i tak naprawdę istnieje tylko jeden drobny szkopuł - zdecydowana większość nie ma pojęcia, o kim mowa;) (nie, nie o hippisach!) Spokojnie, celem tego felietonu nie jest studium hipstera. Jeśli kogoś taka analiza interesuje (w co szczerze wątpię), odsyłam do nielicznej i głównie anglojęzycznej literatury na ten temat. Bardziej niż naukę, mam dzisiaj na myśli zabawę. W adwokata diabła.

To chyba nie do końca tak, że najbardziej śmiejemy się z hipsterów, bo nikt wcześniej nie był taki niedorzeczny. To prawda, hipsterskie stylizacje nie raz mi udowodniały, że jeszcze niejedno mnie w życiu zaskoczy. Ale powód, dla którego są aktualnie na celowniku, jest zapewne taki, że ta subkultura, a może „subkultura”, jest najnowsza. Gros osób zapytanych, kim jest hipster, wzruszy obojętnie ramionami. Część jednym tchem wymieni ogólnie przyjęte atrybuty ich stylu – okulary w dużych oprawkach, szalik, wąskie spodnie, trampki, flanelową koszulę, kapelusz itd. Większość będzie się zarzekać, że w życiu by się tak nie ubrała. I to jest istota rzeczy. Nie ubraliby się również jak punk, got czy otaku. Bo przynależność do jakiejś grupy wymaga podjęcia decyzji, sprecyzowania swoich poglądów i ich manifestacji, a w dzisiejszych czasach większość ludzi ma z tym problem. Coraz częściej skłaniamy się ku relatywizmowi, ku przekonaniu, że wszystko ma dwie strony medalu i nie ma rzeczy bezwzględnych. Jedyny Absolut, w jaki wierzymy ma pokaźny wybór smaków i raczej nas nie zawiedzie do nieba, a co najwyżej wystrzeli na parę godzin na orbitę, a potem zapewni twarde lądowanie na głowie. Ta enigmatyczna subkultura jest prawdopodobnie jedną z najbardziej niezaangażowanych[1]. Owszem, przyjmuje się, że poglądy jej przedstawicieli są mocno lewicujące (m.in. postulat pomocy słabszym, równouprawnienia kobiet i wszelkich mniejszości, ekologia czy weganizm). Ale są bardziej wyznawane niż głoszone. Hipsterski vajb rozwija się głównie na płaszczyźnie modowej i muzycznej, a nie ideowej. To styl bycia i ubierania się, niezależna muzyka i sztuka w ogóle.

Hipsterzy skupiają się na swoim życiu, swoich zainteresowaniach, nie chcą wiedzieć, kto jest aktualnie u władzy i jaki ma program polityczny, nie chcą chłonąc wiedzy ogólnej, tylko sięgać po te konkretne fragmenty rzeczywistości, które ich interesują. Dotychczas funkcjonowało przekonanie, że ogólne wykształcenie ma ogromną wartość, że członek przyszłej elity powinien mieć pojęcie o wszystkim i na każdy temat móc się wypowiedzieć. A aktualnie obserwujemy zwrot ku specjalizacji. Który pogląd jest słuszny? Na pewno pierwszy z nich jest bardziej zachowawczy. To trochę opcja dla ludzi, którzy chcą poznać wszystko po trochu, żeby w razie życiowego niepowodzenia elastycznie i możliwie bezboleśnie zmienić obszar działania. Druga z kolei jest dla odważnych i dla ludzi z pasją, którzy po prostu wierzą w swoje możliwości.

A ideą, która leży u podstaw tego zjawiska społecznego, jest ucieczka od przeciętności. Chęć wyróżniania się na tle innych nie jest sama w sobie niczym złym. Zarzut, że mimo oczywistego żonglowania stylami i estetykami, w ostatecznym rozrachunku wszyscy hipsterzy wyglądają i zachowują się tak samo, że ich nonkonformizm jest tylko pozorny, nie do końca do mnie przemawia. Istotą grupy nie jest odróżnianie się od siebie nawzajem, tylko od INNYCH. A do subkultury nie trzeba się zapisać, po prostu implementuje się we własnych życiu charakterystyczne dla niej elementy.

Jeśli największe domy handlowe (a więc mainstream i komercha) zainteresowały się tym stylem, możemy być bardziej spokojni o młode pokolenie – dla nich hipster to będzie tylko sposób ubierania się, jak glamour czy klasyczna elegancja. Wchodząc do H&M mam czasem wrażenie, że nową polityką tej firmy jest nas przebierać, a nie ubierać. A oni kolekcje stworzone przy współpracy z Jimmym Choo czy Versace puszczają pomiędzy te powstające dzięki żmudnej pracy cool hunterów, prowadzących tajny nadzór nad środowiskami hipsterskimi. Ta inwigilacja, skądinąd, może mieć pozytywne aspekty. Korzystając z pełnych entuzjazmu poszukiwań hipsterów, możemy poznać nową, ciekawą sztukę. Nie mówię o studiowaniu estetyki na przykładzie wysiękowego zapalenia skóry. Bez przesady, inteligentny człowiek nie da sobie niczego wmówić – potrafi ocenić czy coś mu się podoba czy jest tylko efektem zbiorowej histerii, w której on nie chce wziąć udziału.

Teoretycznie najłatwiej jest się nie wychylać. Nie spróbować, nie ponosić psychicznych kosztów ewentualnej porażki. W szeregu jest przecież najbezpieczniej. Przeciętny człowiek ogląda się na innych nie po to, żeby szukać w nich inspiracji, autorytetu, zastanowić się nad własnymi aspiracjami. Analizuje otoczenie po to, żeby odnaleźć medianę i się do niej upodobnić. W natłoku informacji, trendów i nowinek technicznych, w czasach globalnego ochłodzenia stosunków między ludźmi, desperacko pragnie akceptacji. Odrzuca więc skrajne wartości, ale przeciwnie niż w skokach narciarskich, zamiast lotu czeka go co najwyżej zamiatanie śniegu po cudzych telemarkach. I to raczej nie jest złoty środek tylko najlepszy środek na hemoroidy. Nie wykluczam, że trzeba mieć specjalną konstrukcję psychiczną, żeby przezwyciężyć strach przed niepowodzeniem. Z drugiej strony, nic tak nie dodaje skrzydeł jak pozytywne sprzężenie zwrotne. Ale to wymaga podjęcia działania.

Potrafię sobie wyobrazić, że w każdym pokoleniu jest grupa ludzi, którzy wierzą, że wszystko już było i nic nowego się nie wydarzy. Ewidentnie mają na bakier z kreatywnością i wyobraźnią w ogóle. Nie każdy, kto ma ochotę pisać, studiuje najpierw całą historię literatury, żeby poznać istniejące style i upewnić się, na jakie tematy już pisano. A producenci muzyczni nadal istnieją i mają się dobrze, bo nie blokują swojego umysłu wątpieniem czy uda im się wymyślić melodię, jakiej jeszcze nie było, a wpadnie w ucho odbiorcom. Śmiem twierdzić, że możliwości w obu tych dziedzinach są niewyczerpane. Hipsterzy szukają swojego miejsca w wolnych zawodach, więc ich dekadentyzm przejawia się nie w braku kreatywności, a co najwyżej pogardzie dla gwałtownego okazywania jakichkolwiek uczuć[2] Co prawda wiele definicji podaje, że hipster nie tworzy nic własnego, tylko świetnie orientuje się w aktualnych trendach muzycznych i modowych. Ale trudno nie dostrzec oczywistego społecznego skutku, produktu ich wycofanej postawy. Kolejne sztuki owiec odłączają się od pędzonego przed siebie bez celu stada.

Czy rezygnacja z amerykańskiego kina na rzecz bardziej ambitnych, alternatywnych produkcji czyni już kogoś hipsterem? Nie. Inteligentny człowiek powinien doskonale rozumieć chęć ucieczki od papki, której magiczną właściwością jest prostowanie zwojów mózgowych – zarówno w telewizji, jak i w kinie, prasie czy literaturze. Wynika ona z nieodpartej potrzeby samodzielnego MYŚLENIA. Rozumiem, naukowcy na przykładzie Japończyków wskazują, że człowiek, który spędza znaczną część swojego czasu w pracy, i to pod dużą presją, potrzebuje czasami „odmóżdżenia”. Stąd idzie do kina na komedię romantyczną, przerzuca kolorowy magazyn albo ogląda tępawy serial telewizyjny (w przypadku mieszkańców Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni – pielęgnuje swoje tamagotchi). Wszystko ok, jeśli myślenie nie staje się przerwą od takiego życia. Wegetarianizm może i tak, ale nie wegetacja.

Moi najbardziej offowi znajomi otwarcie deklarują, że już dawno zrezygnowali ze śledzenia telewizji i codziennej prasy. Nie na rzecz bardziej niezależnych źródeł – odrzucili ideę bycia na bieżąco ze społeczeństwem w ogóle. Chcą być takimi trochę idiotami, o których opowiadał Lars von Trier w filmie o tym samym tytule. Stającymi w opozycji do społeczeństwa i systemu, unikającymi stresu i bólu, obowiązków i planowania przyszłości. Hedonistami idealnymi. Ale czy taką postawę można podciągnąć pod hipsterów? A może taka konstrukcja psychologiczna to wytwór naszych cyberczasów? Tylko… jeżeli wszyscy nagle zaczną się ubierać poza sieciówkami i przestaną angażować w bieżące życie społeczne, to kto będzie wtedy outsiderem?

Jeśli odpowiedziałeś TAK na co najmniej trzy z powyższych pytań, na pewno znasz już tę piosenkę, którą chcę Ci zadedykować.

There is no life without its hipster side. (Are we facing a collective hy(p)steria?)

They are everywhere with their snub noses, threadbare skinny pants and expensive gadgets. You better get yourselves a haircut, and then a decent job, loafers! Fuck them hipsters, right?! We all agree in this regard, and there is only one small hitch - the great majority of people have no idea who are we talking about (no, not the hippies!) Relax, the goal of this essay is not no analyze hipsters. If someone is interested in such studies (which I sincerely doubt), there is only small and mostly English-language literature on the subject available. Today it’s not about studying tough. It’s about fun and I’m going to play devil's advocate.

It’s not like people laugh at hipsters so much, because no one had ever been so ridiculous before. That's right, some of the hipster looks prove that life will surprise us time and again. But the reason why they are now under fire is simply because this subculture, or perhaps ‘subculture’, is the latest. The majority of people asked who hipsters are, will shrug their shoulders indifferently. Some will at once list all conventional attributes of the hipster style - nerd glasses, a scarf, well-fitted pants, pair of sneakers, a flannel shirt, a hat, etc. Most people will swear they would never dress like that. And maybe that's the essence of the matter. They wouldn’t dress like punks, goths or otaku either. Because affinity with any kind of a group requires decision making, pinpointing of ones views and manifesting them. And nowadays, most people have a problem with that. More and more often we incline towards relativism, the belief that there are two sides to every coin and nothing is absolute. The only Absolute we actually believe in, has a great selection of flavors and will rather not grant us a place in heaven. At most it will give us a few hours of a cosmic ride and a hard landing on our heads afterwards. And this enigmatic subculture is probably one of the most non-committed.[1]

It is assumed that their views are strongly leftist (i.e. the demand to help the underprivileged, equal rights for women and all minorities, emphasis on the environmental protection and veganism). But in my opinion they are rather professed than preached. Hipster vajb develops mainly within a frame of fashion and music, not ideology. It’s a manner and a way of dressing, indie music and art in general.

The difference between homeless and hipster

Hipsters focus on their own lives, individual interests, they don’t want to know the currently ruling party and its political agenda, they don’t want to obtain general knowledge, only to get to know certain pieces of reality that interest them. So far we’ve believed that general education is of the greatest value and a member of the future elite should have a basic concept of everything and be able to speak his mind on every subject. And now we observe a shift towards specialization. How do we know which view is correct? Certainly, the first one is more preservative. It's an option for people who want to know a bit of everything, so in the event of a professional failure they would be able to shift to another area of activity flexibly and painlessly. The second option is for the brave and passionate ones who simply believe in themselves.

A concept that lies at the bottom of this social phenomenon, is to escape the ordinary. The desire to distinguish from the others is itself not a bad thing. The accusation that despite juggling with styles and aesthetics, in the end, all hipsters look and behave exactly the same and that their nonconformity is only apparent, does not appeal to me. The essence of the group, is not the internal variety, but to differ from the other groups. And one does not enroll to a subculture, he just implements its rules and peculiarities in his own life.

If top fashion brands (so mainstream and purely commercial) show interest in this style, we can be more confident of the younger generation - for them, it will only be a hipster way of dressing, just like glamorous or classic elegance. Entering H&M shop I sometimes get the feeling that their new policy is to disguise customer, not to dress him. Whereas they put collections designed in collaboration with Jimmy Choo or Versace between those created due to the hard work of cool hunters, conducting undercover surveillance in hipster environment. On the other hand, this unusual research may have positive aspects. Using the results of enthusiastic hipsters’ research, we can discover new and interesting art. And I'm not talking about studying aesthetics on the example of dermatitis. I mean come on, if someone is intelligent, he’s not gullible – he is able to independently judge whether he really likes something or if it’s just a result of mass hysteria he doesn’t want to be part of.

Theoretically, the easiest option is to lay low. Not to try, and therefore don’t have to bear the psychical costs of a possible failure. Toeing the line is the safest. The average man watches the others not only to find inspiration, authority, to think about his own aspirations. He analyzes the environment to find the median, the average and to imitate it. Facing the multitude of information, trends and technical innovations, in times of global cooling of relations between people, he desperately seeks acceptance. In order to gain it, he rejects the extreme values, like in the ski jumping, but doing that the most he can expect is not the breathtaking flight, but only sweeping snow after others’ telemarks. And it's not exactly the golden mean, but the hemorrhoids’ favorite middle. It is quite possible that one need a special mental structure to overcome the fear of failure. On the other hand, nothing gives you wings quite like a positive feedback. But it requires to take action in the first place.

Probably in every single generation there is a group of people who believe that everything has already happened and that the same things will happen again and again (nihil novi sub sole). With no doubt they are not at home with the creativity and imagination in general. Someone who wants to be a writer, doesn’t have to study the entire history of the literature first, in order to get familiar with the existing styles and to find out what subjects have already been taken up. Similarly, music producers still exist and are doing fine, because they don’t doubt that they can come up with an original melody which will ravish the audience. I dare to say that the opportunities in both of these areas are endless. Hipsters try to realise themselves as freelancers, so their decadence consists not in the lack of creativity, but the contempt for showing any emotions, getting excited about anything.[2] According to many definitions, hipsters don’t create anything new, they are just familiar with the latest trends in music and fashion. But it's hard to ignore the obvious social effect of their withdrawn attitude. Another sheep separate from the mob.

Does choosing ambitious alternative movies over the trivial American productions make one a hipster? No. Intelligent person should understand well the desire to escape the brains-straightening pulp served on television and in the cinema, in press and literature. It stems from a compelling need for independent THINKING. Fair enough, the Japanese scientists argue that a man who spends most of his life at work, and is put under a lot of pressure, sometimes needs a switch off. Therefore, he goes to the cinema to see a romantic comedy, flicks through a colorful magazine or watches some no-brainer serial on TV (or takes care of his Tamagotchi in case of inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun). It’s okay, as long as thinking isn’t just a change from such a lifestyle. We may say ‘yes’ to vegetarianism, but not to vegetation.

My most ‘off-the-mainstream’ friends declare that they have stopped following TV and daily newspapers long time ago. Not for the benefit of more independent sources – they rejected the idea of being up-to-date with the society in general. They sort of want to be the idiots, whom Lars von Trier presented in his movie with the same title. To resist society and the system, to evade the stress and pain, obligations and plan for the future. The perfect hedonists. But is this kind of attitude exclusively hipsters’ domain? Perhaps such a psychological structure is a product of the cyber era we live in? But ... if we all suddenly start to wear second-hand clothes and withdraw from the current political and social life, whom we will call the maverick then?

Terry Richardson – profesjonalny fotograf czy zawodowy zwyrol? (Terry Richardson – photographer by occupation or professional pervert?)

Terry Richardson – jeden z najlepszych obecnie fotografów na świecie, pracujący z najjaśniejszymi gwiazdami show biznesu, dla czołowych magazynów modowych i największych domów mody – ale tylko tych, które nie boją się tego, czego Terry ma do zaoferowania najwięcej – prowokacji. Znany jest z mieszania konwencji i z realizowania wielkich kampanii reklamowych przy użyciu aparatu kompaktowego. Zdaje się nie dbać o szczegóły, a mimo potrafi osiągnąć piorunujący efekt. Zestawienie niemal ascetycznych prac Terry’ego na przykład z surrealistycznym przesytem Dave'a Lachapelle’a (http://www.davidlachapelle.com/) przywołuje na myśl dwie różne epoki. Może dlatego świat mody się w nim zakochał. Nie jest przekombinowany, a z większości jego zdjęć bije jakby pochwała życia.

Oczywiście ten medal ma też drugą stronę. W wielu osobach Terry budzi niesmak. Uważają go za starego dziada we flaneli i z wąsem, który nadużywa swojej władzy, żeby pogapić się (żeby tylko!) na nagie ciała modelek. Trudno puścić mimo uszu skargi niektórych z nich na niekomfortowe warunki pracy (Terry rozbiera je, siebie, swojego asystenta itp.), a nawet wniesione przeciwko niemu oficjalne oskarżenie o molestowanie seksualne. Jego prace mówią same za siebie.

Terry prowadzi fotobloga, na którym jest zresztą bardzo aktywny (http://www.terrysdiary.com). Patrząc na zamieszczane tam zdjęcia ktoś mógłby powiedzieć „Przecież każda sesja jest taka sama! To portrety na białej ścianie z wariacjami:

- nagości,

- fetyszu,

- długich włosów (nie tylko na głowie), chętnie rudych,

- czerwonej szminki,

- tatuaży,

- wystających kości albo wystającego brzucha,

- zacierania różnic między płciami,

- żartu albo wyzwania,

- jego wielkich okularów,

- jego samego ubranego w kultową koszulę w kratkę, z uniesionym w górę kciukiem i szczerzącym żółte zęby”.

I chyba miałby sporo racji.

Ale w jakiś niesamowity sposób ten styl może się podobać. Wyczuwalny na zdjęciach luz może być dowodem na to, że praca z tym fotografem to nie mordęga, ale po prostu dobra zabawa. Widocznie świat kocha oryginałów. A to odcięcie od mainstreamu zapewnia nam przecież alternatywę, którą tak lubimy mieć. No i lubimy też być prowokowani. Abstrahując od modelek, Terry ma na koncie liczne sesje z gwiazdami największego formatu! Najodważniejsze, rzecz jasna, z tymi żyjącymi z kontrowersji - Lady Gaga, Linsday Lohan, ale pozowały dla niego również takie anioły jak Jessica Alba czy Beyonce. Bo w sumie jak długo można wyrażać uznanie dla tych samym motywów i konwenansów? Przyklaskiwać sztuce, której owoce możemy nazwać roboczo „atakiem klonów”. Widocznie nie wszystko, co interesujące, mieści się w granicach dobrego smaku.

Z drugiej strony, warto się zastanowić jak wiele jesteśmy w stanie poświęcić dla dobra sztuki, w imię wolności ekspresji? Rosnąca popularność Terry’ego dowodzi, że całkiem sporo. Zwłaszcza, jeśli nie chodzi o nasze siostry i córki, ani poczucie własnej godności. Przecież to oczywiste, że te wszystkie wychudzone modelki tylko marzą o tym, by się rozebrać przed obiektywem znanego fotografa, albo nieznanego – nieważne, chodzi wyłącznie o karmienie nadziei, że na fundamencie trudnych początków rozkwitnie międzynarodowa kariera. Rozumie to doskonale każdy przedstawiciel amerykańskiego świata mody, windującego Terry’ego na piedestał, który z pewnością sam marzy o obcowaniu z nagim bezpruderyjnym wąsatym fotografem!

Oto jak w jednym wywiadów Terry tłumaczył się ze swoich nietypowych praktyk:

„Na początek robię kilka fotografii nago. Więc sam się rozbieram i namawiam do tego modelkę. Czasem nawet daję jej aparat i pozwalam zrobić mi parę zdjęć. Dla rozluźnienia i wprowadzenia właściwej atmosfery. Nie wydaje mi się, żebym był uzależniony od seksu, ale mam swoje problemy. Może dlatego, że jako dziecko byłem nieśmiały, a teraz jestem tym wielkim facetem z ogromną władzą?”

Czytając to wyjaśnienie nie mogę się pozbyć wrażenia, że ten jego charakterystyczny uśmiech mówi: „hahahahaha, wasza intuicja was nie myli – jestem zwykłym zwyrolem, ale przez to, że każdy z was ma w sobie coś ze mnie, tolerujecie moje fanaberie! i dzięki temu, za każdym razem, jak chcę zobaczyć cycki, po prostu wskazuję na kogoś palcem i mówię „ej, ty!””

A może… te wąsy, koszula, głupkowaty, lubieżny uśmiech to tylko taki żart? Stylówka jak każda inna, a przy tym hipsterska, więc bardzo na czasie. I może rzeczywiście nie ma co histeryzować z powodu nagości, bo moda i sztuka wymagają zarówno od twórcy, jak i obiektu choć odrobiny ekshibicjonizmu..

Co do jednego nie mam wątpliwości –obok Guy’a Bourdina, Oliviera Toscaniego czy Stevena Meisela, Terry to jeden z moich ulubionych profesjonalnych fotografów (albo zawodowych zwyroli;) ).

Terry Richardson – photographer by occupation or professional pervert?

Terry Richardson – currently one of the best photographers in the world. Working with the most famous celebrities, best fashion magazines and numerous top designer fashion houses. But only those not afraid of what he has to offer in abundance – provocation. He is famous for mixing conventions and producing shot campaigns for the fashion giants using simple compact camera. He seems not to pay attention to details hence he knows how to get a sensational results. Comparison of Terry’s almost ascetic works with for example Dave Lachapelle’s surrealistic surfeit brings to mind two different eras. Maybe this is the reason why fashion industry felt for him – he’s not too complicated and many of his pictures simply emanate praise of life.

Of course, there is the other side of the coin. Some people find Terry Richardson disgusting. For some he’s nothing more than an old man wearing a flannel shirt and creepy moustache, who abuses his power to undress (at the very least) young models.

It’s hard to turn a deaf ear on models’ complaints about awkward atmosphere on the set (Terry encourages them to take their clothes off, he undresses himself, his assistant etc.) nor the official charges of sexual harassment. His works speak for themselves.

Terry runs his own photoblog. After watching its content one may jump to a surprising conclusion: „But all his photo shoots are the same! These are all portraits against white wall with variations of:

- nudity

- fetish,

- long hair (not only on top of the head), preferably red,

- red lipstick,

- tattoos,

- thinness or beer bellies,

- blur of distinctions between the sexes,

- joke or a challenge,

- his huge nerd glasses,

- himself dressed in a cult check shirt, with his thumb up, grinning from ear to ear showing his yellow teeth.”

Frankly, he wouldn’t be very wrong.

But this separation from the mainstream is an alternative we all love to have. And we like to be provoked. Apart from models, Terry shot plenty of some real deal superstars! The most daring photo shoots were casted by most controversial celebrities such as Lady Gaga or Linsday Lohan, but he has also had such sweethearts like Jessica Alba or Beyonce posing for him. After all, how long can one appreciate the same motives and etiquette? Applaud art which is not creating but cloning? Apparently the interesting does not always fit in the boundaries of good taste.

However incredibly it may sound – this style can tickle one's fancy. The ease visible in his pictures can be considered a proof that working with him is more of a fun than a torment. Clearly the world loves freaks.

One the other hand, we should think about how much can we sacrifice in the name of art and freedom of expression? Apparently a lot, considering Terry’s growing popularity. Especially when it doesn’t concern neither our sisters and daughters nor self-respect. I mean, come on – we all know best that all those skinny models are dying to undress in front of a famous photographer. Or any photographer at all, just hoping to make an international career. This is a common knowledge in the fashion industry which puts Terry on a pedestal. I am sure that every member of this business likewise dreams about working with unprudish photographer with a creepy moustache and his clothes off.

This is how Terry explained his ‘non-standard M.O.’ in one of the interviews:

„I start a shoot with taking some naked pictures. So I first undress myself and then encourage model to follow my example. Sometimes I even hand her the camera and let her take some pictures of me in order to achieve a proper, relaxed atmosphere on the set. I don’t think I’m a sex addict but I do have my problems. Maybe that’s because I used to be a shy kid and suddenly I am this guy with a huge authority?”

Seeing such an explanation I can’t stop myself from thinking that his smile really says: „hahahahaha, you’re right – I’m just an old perv, but you tolerate my eccentricities because there is a little perv in each one of you. Thanks to you every time I wanna see tits I just point at someone and shout ‘hey you!’”.

On the other hand… Maybe the moustache, flannel shirt, daft and lustful smile - all of that is just a joke? Just some kind of a hipster swag. And maybe in fact there are no reasons to overreact because of some nudity. After all fashion and art as a whole require some exhibitionism both from the artist and his muse...

One thing is beyond doubt – beside Guy Bourdin, Oliviero Toscani or Steven Meisel, Terry is one of my favorite photographers (or professional perverts;) )
